The dark skies of the day didn't put a damper on the fun had by 8 CNY Kayakers.  Roger, Gene, Tish, Hugh, Robert, Aneta, Larry and Roxanne enjoyed a scenic trip around Howland Island. The rain started seconds after put-in and stopped moments after take-out.All were wet through and learned a little about what to wear - or not to wear.I learned that a "paddle jacket" is NOT waterproof.Aneta learned that a spray skirt would be nice on a cold, rainy day.Tish learned that a hat would help keep the rain off of her glasses so she could see what was in the water ahead. The day gave us a chance to get closer to each other and close to nature and earth - literally - as there wasn't much water between our kayaks and the earth. Some of the trip found us traversing through little water, and much mud, seaweed and lilly pods.Three Blue Herron's joined us and lead the way around the entire island.  Eagle eyes,Roger, spotted a maturing bald eagle, and all enjoyed watching the geese and their baby goslings along the way.During our carryover and stop, Gene and Robert enjoyed a 1/4 mile scenic walk trying to find the nearest restrooms.I think all Gene found was the poison ivy.We nearly made it 10.5 miles without any kayaks going to the graveyard. At take-out,Hugh's skeg broke off (note:  it was NOT purchased at Camillus Kayak). After the trip, 7 of us enjoyed a nice meal and many laughs at the Lock 24.We wish Robert and Aneta a safe and enjoyable trip to Europe and look forward to their return.
