“Maybe we shouldn’t be pushed along with the current so willy-nilly” said
Opus in the morning funnies. He was obviously not thinking about a
wonderfully overcast Sunday on an adventurous paddle with 15 fun people in
PFDs. Willy-nilly is such a perfect word to describe the kayakers who
paddled down the river, over the gas line, through the lock and into wide
open Cayuga Lake. Some charged out through the waves into the middle of
the lake to the large bridge. Others took the slightly less bumpy route
under the smaller bridge by the marina. I don’t know exactly how long the
paddle was, but I knew when we hit the 2-mile mark. Someone’s bottom
starts hurting at about 2 miles each trip. (Hummm, I think that could be
useful info someday.) All met for loads of snacks at the park. Pink
cookies, luscious cheese & beef stick, nutritious apples, wheat crackers,
nuts mixes, and miniature (okay, ¾ size) cereal bars that Roger said were
“just 90 calories”. Then back through the lock, down the river and into
the cars just as it started to sprinkle. The timing was “perfecto”, again.
About 8 or so caravanned down the highway to try out Buffalo Wild Wings in
Auburn. No one was disappointed, except for the fact that not a soul had
any room for desert. Oh, yeah, about that lock incident. The lock was
educational in a weird sort of way. The zebra muscles spit out newly
filtered water on you as the water goes down. Cool biology … and useful.
That unique clean shower came in handy since I did a 180 on the way through
earlier. The knights in shining kayaks were happy to practice their rescue
techniques and all was well. My heroes.
