22 paddlers launched from the big open parking lot right next to the lake just off the Solvay exit of 690. We paddled up the west side of the lake in a nice chop, beginning with a light mist but then just cloudy with a light breeze which was creating the waves. Just before we reached the 9 Mile Creek outlet we saw a white Ibis on the shore - quite a lovely sight - kinda like a Great Blue Heron but completely white with a yellow bill. We paddled up the Creek to the Honeywell launch and a few got out to stretch while others rafted and some explored. Paddling back we were visited by a Kingfisher on the creek, then in the same spot as the Ibis, Bob and Chris observed an immature Bald Eagle as they were geocaching. The total paddle distance was 6 miles and with the wind and waves the total time was approximately 3 hours. Although it was a gray day the water was clear, the launch area was excellent, as was the parking lot. The west side of the lake is seeing a resurgence of wildlife, which was great to get a glimpse of. 14 of us proceeded down the road to Quaker Steak & Lube for a delicious meal and some brewskis in a unique "theme-based" restaurant new to our area. |
