Sheldon Memorial Park in Bridgeport had a very nice put in with sufficient parking, a pavilion with picnic tables, lush grass, and a maroon-boy (it was not blue). Twenty paddlers and a canine companion arrived well ahead of time to paddle Chittenango Creek to Oneida Lake: Anne and Roger, Christine and Phil, Cindy and Rick, Tish and Gene, Aneta and Robert, Jerry, Bob, David G., David F., Kim W., Donna, Howard, Chuck, Patty Y., Maggie, and Edgar the dog. We shuttled cars to Fish Bay Restaurant so efficiently that only two cars needed to be left in Sheldon Park for later pickup.
The weather was great, and the water temperature reached 58 degrees. Several people, already in the water, huddled by the shores holding onto branches and roots to prevent being swept downstream while waiting for the rest of the group to launch. The first portion of the paddle was swift due to the fast moving current, which made the creek seem slightly intimidating. However, the fun ride ended quickly as the stream settled into a flat slow moving flow. We encountered several motor boats and fishermen. We regrouped at the mouth of the lake and proceeded along the shore enjoying a light breeze and playful waves. We arrived at the Fisher Bay Restaurant take out after completing about 4.5 miles. We sat outdoors enjoying the sun, good company, drinks and dinner |
