One of the hottest Sundays of this year’s cool and rainy summer drew 30 kayakers, including a couple from Florida, to paddle Seneca River off of the north tip of Cayuga Lake: Herb, Peter, Karen, another Karen, Raymond, Ruth and Bill, Mary and Charles, Marion, Marsha, Cindy and Rick, Bob, Lynn, Patti, Greg, Christine and Phil with Edgar (woof!), Pam, Tish and Gene, Ellen, Anne and Roger, Happy, Kim W., Susan, and Aneta and Robert. standably took a lot of time, we headed for the Mud Lock where we were let through the lock in a record number of 32 kayaks, as we were joined by two more kayakers separate from our group. It was fun to watch row after row of colorful kayaks bundled in clusters of two to five by each rope.
Cayuga Lake was hazy and wavy, so it was a good thing we picked out the relaxing river to paddle. Seneca River offered a safe haven from the wind, but not the heat. To cool people off Phil and Greg provided “splash upon request” services, as well as unsolicited ones in some cases. We covered about 3.5 miles when we experienced a few sprinkles of rain and heard a thunder. Concerned for our safety, the majority of the group decided to turn around, while some members continued on to get more substantial mileage. Luckily the weather spared us from any unpleasantries, and we completed the trip having paddled 7.4 carefree miles. Afterwards, 16 club members went to Chilis for dinner and drinks.
