Seneca Lake State Park is a beautiful large green area that surrounds most of the northern end and some of the eastern end of Seneca Lake. The park has a marina, a boat launch, a playground, a beach, trails, bathrooms, and picnic tables. The park provides a scenic view of the lake’s shoreline, including the town of Geneva. The boat launch has an easy concrete slope and is located in a small channel that first connects to Seneca River, and then to Seneca Lake. This makes for a convenient launch and safe access to the lake.
It was a lovely sunny day, although a bit chilly and slightly windy. Larry, Bob, Robert, and Aneta set out towards the lake a little after 1 pm. The lake was fairly calm and mostly deserted but for a few motorboats and a large group of sailboats from the local yacht club. We cut across the northern tip of the lake and stopped at a small beach in Geneva looking out for Lynn and Greg, who were expected to join us. After eating lunch and failing to spot the two, we set out south along the western shore. After a while we were joined be Lynn and Greg, who spotted us thanks to Larry’s white paddle blades that reflected the sunlight. The six of us kept paddling south until, upon reaching 4.5 miles,
we turned back to cut across the lake towards the park. |
The wind picked up and we paddled through increasingly large and confused waves. It was exhilarating and fun. The waves were slamming sideways against the kayaks making it a wet ride. My boat experienced an occasional identity crisis when it thought it was a plane. The bow would lift up high above the water as if for take-off, but of course it would slam down splashing in the end. It was a great workout paddling and keeping balance while being constantly rocked by the waves. The scenery was gorgeous, and it felt like a luxury vacation. We completed the paddle slightly short of 8 miles, and we can’t wait to do it again.
