Approximately 10-12 Miles
Best For Experienced Paddlers
Kayuta Lake is located on the way to Old Forge.
This trip is for experienced paddlers because of the distance. The paddle
is through a series of small lakes and is approximately 10-12 miles round
trip. A spray skirt would be helpful. We will meet at the launch site at 11:00 AM (See Directions
Below). Please be sure that you are properly dressed for the paddle and have all appropriate equipment. If there is interest, we can go to the Buffalo Head Inn in Forestport
for dinner after the trip.
Directions from Syracuse: Take the NYS Thruway
east from Syracuse to Exit 33 which is Route 365. This is also the exit for the
Turning Stone Casino. Take
Route 365 toward Rome, NY. There are several turns as Route 365 goes around
Rome, so watch for the Route 365 signs. Continue on Route 365. You will be
going through Holland Patent and Barneveld. Route 365 takes a left turn in
Barneveld. Continue through Barneveld to Routes 12 & 28 North. Take Routes
12 & 28 North toward Old Forge. Just past the Kayuta Kwick n E-Z on your right, Routes 12 & 28 split (Note: This Kwick n E-Z is now closed).
Take Route 28 toward Old Forge. About one tenth of a mile past this intersection
you will see a highway department storage dome on the left. On the right
opposite this dome you will see State Dam Road. Follow State Dam Road about
one mile to the launch point. The road is bumpy, so go slow. The GPS coordinates
of the launch point are N43° 25.362 and W075° 12.454.
Special Note: This is the time of year when the weather can change quickly. Please check the Web site the night before the trip in the event that there are any last minute changes in the plan for this trip.
