Stillwater Weekend Overnight
August 16-18, 2008

We have made accommodations at the Norridgewock Lodge at Beaver River for all members who have registered for the trip. The trip is scheduled for August 16-18. We will meet at the Stillwater Reservoir boat launch at 11:30 AM on Saturday, August 16th. Our gear will be shipped by boat to the lodge (there is an extra fee for this service). We will begin our paddle around 12:30 PM. If you aren't there by then, you're on your own to paddle down the reservoir. Please be sure that you are properly dressed for the paddle and have all appropriate equipment. There can be waves if it's windy, so a spray skirt is strongly recommended. Typically, if there are wind and waves, they will be at our backs on the way down the reservoir, but the wind is usually in your face on the way back. Last year we were lucky. There was very little wind on the return trip. Parking at Stillwater can sometimes be a problem if it is a busy weekend. You will be able to find a spot, but you may have to walk a distance. The earlier you arrive, the better your chance of a good parking spot.

Also note, there is a water taxi that goes from the parking lot to the end of the lake where a short "wheeled taxi" ride can take one right to the lodge (there is a fee). Therefore, even non-paddlers can enjoy the weekend. One year, rather than fight the wind the next day, we all just took that water taxi (which transported us with our kayaks) right back to our cars. Ah, the life of luxury...

On Saturday, we will have about an 8 1/2 mile trip down the reservoir. There are ample sandy beaches to stop and rest, eat, swim, whatever. Those who want to, can explore the far end of the lake on Sunday.

There is swimming or hiking right at the Lodge, and we'll organize any activities a group would like to do. There's a bar or you can BYOB for the cabins. There's also a game room and a store. To see where we're going, go to: http://www.beaverriver.com.

The Lodge houses about 30 people (depends on singles/couples/children) and consists of cabins and motel rooms. Cost will be $185 per person which includes two nights lodging, dinners on Saturday and Sunday, breakfasts on Sunday and Monday, and all taxes and gratuities. You can either bring stuff for lunches or purchase them in the restaurant at the lodge (quite reasonable). Your reservation is your full payment and is non-refundable, unless there is someone on the waiting list to take your place.

To make your reservation, please send your checks in the amount of $185 (made out to CNY Kayakers) to:

CNY Kayakers
4930 Kasson Rd
Syracuse 13215.

Be sure to bring the following:

* Bug repellent
* A hat that won't blow off - for sun protection
* Sunscreen
* Rain gear
* Snack food for the paddles
* An extra towel if you are planning to go swimming (the Lodge provides one for showering and also provides bedding)
* You can bring alcohol or purchase some there, but note there are two short portages (see below) so you'll have to carry what you bring
* Lunches if you aren't planning on buying them (remember, Sunday you could be out paddling at lunch time)

Directions for the Stillwater Trip: Take Interstate 90 east from Syracuse to Utica. From the Utica exit, take Routes 12 & 28 north toward Old Forge. Just past the Kayuta Kwick n E-Z on your right, Routes 12 & 28 split. Take Route 28 toward Old Forge. Continue through Old Forge to Eagle Bay. In Eagle Bay, you will turn left onto the Stillwater/Big Moose Road. Continue on this road. It will eventually become a dirt road. Stay on the dirt road to the T-intersection. Turn right at this intersection. You will see a short section of paved road that will take you to the landing. Note: It is also possible to get to Stillwater through Lowville, but the directions are a little more complicated. Take your pick.
