Kayuta Lake
May 22, 2016

Well, FINALLY we had a decent forecast and we were able to get together for the first un-cancelled club paddle of the season. Eight people ventured north, south or east to launch at Kayuta Lake. They were Robert and Aneta, Tim and Karen P, Eric, Karin, Kim and Bill E. Only a couple of motorized boats were on the water, so it was a pleasant spring paddle. We noticed several people putting out their docks and cleaning up their camps and boats. The trees were just beginning to turn green. Ducks, geese and a blue jay kept us company. A lone turtle sunned himself on a log by the bridge. The fuzzy goslings watched us with interest. The weather person predicted a chance of a shower at 1 PM and another at 4 PM so we kept our eyes on the sky. A couple of kayakers paddled to the third bridge and decided to make their way back to the launch slowly under the graying sky in case a storm kicked up some big waves. A 5-minute sprinkle came at 1:30 PM and they sought shelter under the railroad bridge. It was hit and miss for the rain drops, because that particular bridge is slatted. Oh well, they were a tad drier than the folks who travelled on along the Black River. Those who completed the 10.3 miles did get one more 45-second drizzle at the end of the paddle at 3:30 PM. No biggie. It was a warm day.

We looked forward to the re-opened Buffalo Head restaurant and we were not disappointed. The Sunday special was a club favorite – chicken and biscuits. The presentation was bit different with colorful vegetables on top of the puffed up biscuit. It was delicious. No one had room for dessert, but the coconut and banana cream pies were on the menu. Next time! The décor changed slightly as you can see from the picture of the photogenic group who stood by mama bear in her best Sunday go-to-dinner hat. This paddle was definitely a great start to the club’s 2016 paddling season.
